Multimedia Learning
Key Principles:
- Present words and pictures together on the same slide
- Visual and narration (live or recorded) is better than visual, narration, and on-screen text
- Extraneous information should not be included
- Graphics should supply redundant information to narration/text - graphics used for "cuteness" can actually diminish learning
- Video is particularly helpful for abstract material and to elicit an emotional connection with content
Examples
- Effective use of images
- Effective use of sound
- Effective use of video
Issues to Consider
- File storage - media files (other than pictures) must be saved in the same location as the PowerPoint to work appropriately
- File size - video clips of long duration or large screen size can take up a great deal of memory
- Copyright and Fair Use must be considered carefully in utilizing media in PowerPoint - particularly if you wish to post them on the web
- Posting PowerPoints with video clips online requires extra steps - an explanation
